A cabin rooted in the landscape
The first in a series of contemporary residences built along the Saint Lawrence River, La Cabine A strengthens the connection between the river and its shores.
It draws its inspiration from the International Code of Signals (ICS), a universal visual language historically used for communication at sea. The cabin is located in the Domaine de la Falaise in Petite Rivière Saint François, near Le Massif ski resort, in the beautiful Charlevoix region.
An evocative Shape
References to naval architecture are present yet subtle. In terms of form, the gable roof extends all the way to the ground on the street side. The cabin appears anchored to the earth to prevent it from drifting. The resulting triangular shapes gently evoke sails or ship rigging. Access is via a walkway and a large glass door welcomes you into the wheelhouse.
The letter “A”
The letter A echoes the nautical flag “A” from the maritime signal code, known to all pilots.
It reflects the angular shape of the building, the beginning of a series of architect designed cabins, and the idea of a call to adventure.
Crossing the walkway that leads to the large glass door, you enter a double height space filled with natural light.
Large Russian plywood panels cover the walls and ceiling, extending into the folds of the roof.
The cathedral ceiling mirrors the exterior shape of the Cabine, enhancing the sense of space.
The light tone of the birch wood contrasts elegantly with the darker shades of metal and exterior wood, creating an atmosphere that is both warm and contemporary.
The cathedral ceiling rises, echoing the exterior shape of the Cabine. A boat ladder leads to a secret hideaway in the attic, a playful space that delights children and recalls the maritime spirit of the place.
A topographic model of the region and the river, carved directly into the plywood panels of an interior wall, allows guests to better connect with the place. The location of the Cabine within this magical environment is clearly indicated.
